Landscapes

As you sit on the hillside, or lie prone under the trees of the forest, or sprawl wet-legged by a mountain stream, the great door, that does not look like a door, opens.

DISCOVERY

Our discovery process in landscape design is deeply personal, rooted in how you want to feel as you step outside. Do you envision a sense of calm, vibrancy, or adventure? Our process invites you to explore how the landscape can complement and enhance the architecture, engaging in a dialogue that elevates both. Form, color, and texture come into focus—do you prefer the softness of grasses, the structure of evergreens, or the bursts of seasonal blooms?

Moreover, the landscape’s relationship with the seasons adds a dynamic layer, evolving and responding to the cycles of nature. Through this discovery process, the landscape becomes more than a design feature, but rather an extension of the home.

SITE ANALYSIS

It's critical that the landscape feels both contextual and purposeful. While the design doesn’t necessarily need to match its surroundings, it must engage in a thoughtful dialogue with the local conditions—whether through complement or contrast. Key elements such as light, wind, views, and climate shape the possibilities of how the landscape can function and thrive.

These considerations are fundamental in grounding the architecture within its environment. The landscape becomes a dynamic participant, not just an afterthought, creating a responsive and engaging narrative that strengthens the connection between the spaces and their settings - truly creating an indoor-outdoor experience,

AESTHETIC REVIEW

Just as we carefully choose interior and exterior architectural materials, we must thoughtfully define the palette for the landscape. Do we want the gardens to feel soft and organic, echoing the natural surroundings, or structured and geometric, creating a more formal aesthetic? The choice of tones, whether neutral and calming or bold and vibrant, sets the mood and visual identity of the outdoor space.

Seasons are also critical. A garden intended for winter enjoyment requires plants that offer interest during colder months—think evergreens, striking bark, or ornamental grasses. Conversely, if spring or summer blooms are the focus, the palette should reflect that vibrancy. These deliberate choices ensure that the garden feels alive and purposeful, adapting beautifully throughout the year and creating a landscape that sings in harmony with its architectural counterpart.

VISUALIZATION

The visualization process in landscape design is invaluable, offering the same clarity and precision that technology provides for the architectural and interior process. With the aid of advanced tools, we can transform a simple site survey into a detailed model that captures the nuances of even the most complex terrains. This allows us to carefully situate both the structure and the landscape within their unique context, ensuring the design feels purposeful and responsive.

Through this process, we can explore bold concepts and subtle adjustments alike - ultimately landing on something truly singular, all before breaking ground. By the time construction begins, the landscape design has been meticulously crafted and refined, reducing uncertainty and allowing for the most extraordinary outcome.

DOCUMENTATION

The documentation process in landscape design is the backbone of a successful project, providing clear and comprehensive instructions to guide the work. While we welcome serendipity and moments of surprise, this freedom comes from a foundation of careful planning and confidence in the overall vision. Documentation doesn’t attempt to predict every outcome, but rather ensures the best use of resources, allowing the design to unfold naturally while staying aligned with the grand plan.

Landscapes, by their very nature, are dynamic and ever-changing, not meant to be rigidly controlled. Having a well-defined roadmap allows us to embrace the organic qualities of nature, leaving room for unexpected moments of beauty to emerge. The "north star" of the design provides direction, ensuring fluid integration of these surprises. With detailed documentation, we balance the structure of planning with the spontaneity of nature, creating landscapes that feel both intentional and alive, evolving gracefully over time.
